DIY Elastic Child Safety Lock

diy child lock

This idea was only suppose to be temporary because my son well decided to start walking very early and with walking comes curiosity and with curiosity comes well you know a lot of trouble. Remember that time when parents cant wait for their child to walk and your friends and family say 'Oh you say that now, just wait until your child start getting into things' and you laugh it off. Until one day it happens, you find all your DVDs on the living room floor, pots and pans on the kitchen floor, bottles on the bathroom floor and pen marks on the wall and say '(Insert your child's name here) What have you been doing! I left you for a second and you manage to do this!' So you then admit in your head that your friends and family were right about that.

Since I was in denial about how troublesome my son would be I needed a quick solution to stopping him from getting into the bathroom and kitchen cupboards. I got some free child lock for cupboards that claims to fit all but for some reason it just did not fit mine at all so my son's dad got an thick elastic band and wrapped it around the cupboard door knobs and my son was not able to get the stuff in the cupboard, its been months and the elastic did not break and my son has not been injured by it and thought this is fantastic!
Simple, everyone has one, little fingers cant take it off especially if you do a figure eight style, fits any cupboard and affordable! So the creative side of me decided to take it a step further and give it a design. Here is how I made it:

You will need a thick elastic band.

Wrap the elastic band around something (I used my small notebook)

Make sure that you test out your elastic band first making sure that is fits your cupboard.

Next you will need a Sharpie

You can now decorate with your design.

I decided to create flowers

Here is a closer view

You can wrap it around your cupboard doors knobs.

I hope you have some time, I would love to hear from you. Leave a comment to say how much you enjoyed my post or even say hi, follow me on Twitter, like my Facebook page or  even subscribe. I will do the same! Have a wonderful creative weekend!

  2. Stopping by from the Saturday Sparks link up. This totally works! It's how my mom has always done it. I like the nice touch with decorating the rubber band though :)
